Most activation errors resolve with one of a handful of official fixes. Here are the ones people run into most often, and what to actually do about each.

A quick reference

What you see What it usually means What to try
"We can't activate Windows on this device" after hardware changes The licence is tied to different hardware details than it currently recognises Run the Activation Troubleshooter and select "I changed hardware on this device recently"
Activation error referencing a key already in use The same product key is currently activated on another device Deactivate it on the old device first, then activate on the new one — see our transfer guide for the full process
"The product key you entered didn't work" The key doesn't match the installed edition, or was mistyped Confirm the key matches Home vs Pro exactly, and re-enter it carefully — a single mistyped character is a common cause
Activation server unreachable A temporary connectivity issue, or a Microsoft-side outage Check your internet connection, then try Settings → System → Activation again after a few minutes
"Windows is not activated" after a clean install or reset The installation hasn't yet been matched back to your licence Sign in with the Microsoft account the licence is linked to, then retry activation from Settings

Where to actually fix it

The built-in Activation Troubleshooter is the right first step for almost all of these: go to Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot. It's specifically built to diagnose hardware-change and account-linking scenarios, and in many cases resolves them automatically once you're signed in with the right Microsoft account.

Checking your current licence status

Before troubleshooting further, it helps to know exactly what Windows currently thinks about your licence. An elevated Command Prompt with slmgr /dli reports the current activation status and licence channel; slmgr /dlv gives a more detailed version including the specific edition and channel. This is useful context to have on hand if you do end up contacting support, since it tells you (and us) exactly what state the installation is in rather than relying on guesswork.

A note on what these fixes don't cover

None of the troubleshooting above applies if the key itself was never valid to begin with — for example, a key that was already used up its entitlement before you ever received it, or one affected by a seller-side issue rather than anything on your PC. If you've worked through the troubleshooter and the specific error persists with no change, that's a sign worth raising with whoever sold you the key, rather than continuing to retry the same steps.

When to contact us instead

If you've run the troubleshooter and the key still won't activate, email us with your order confirmation and the exact error text or code shown. We test every key before it's listed for sale, and if a genuine key won't activate for a reason on our side, we replace it or refund you — see our refund policy for details.
